This is a very simple way to make a cute summer dress out of a fun fabric, some elastic and a tank top.
You will need your waist measurement plus 15″ of fabric for the with and then what ever you want for the length, I did 25″.
Then you need your waist measurement minus 4″ in wide elastic, and one tee shirt or tank top that fits you well.
Cut the two pieces of your skirt and then seam them together.
Then press and hem one side of the fabric, i get my hemline done with first, then I know it will be even before I gather the skirt.
Then use a basting stitch on your machine and run a stitch along the other side of your skirt that you haven’t hemmed.
Tie off the ends on one side and then pull one string from the other side to gather the skirt.
You should now have something that looks like this. Make sure your gathered skirt will still fit all the way around your waist.
Now sew your wide elastic to the gathered part of your skirt using a zig zag stitch so that your skirt can still stretch over you head to get it on.
Seam up the other side and you will now have a skirt like this. You can make simple skirts this way too, but now we are going to add a tank to make it a dress.
Measure out where you need to cut your tank and then cut off the bottom, make sure you leave enough seam allowance to sew the skirt to the top.
Then sew the top with a zig zag stitch to the other side of the elastic.
And that’s it! Get creative and make all kinds of different variations this spring! Happy sewing!
