This is a fun way to finish the edge of a simple fleece blanket that is similar to a “tie-blanket”more sophisticated look.

For this project you will need: 20131104_125741

1 1/2″ yards of a fleece material, I used this lavender fleece

scissors

sewing machine and thread

and a crochet hook

To start this project trim your fleece fabric by cutting of the selvage edges to have one nice clean piece of fleece. You should only need to trim 1″ off of two sides.

The you are going to cut a 2″ square out of each corner of the fleece looking like this:

repeat on all four corners.

Now we are going to do 4 simple straight stitch on our machine. Take your blanket and fold the edges over so you make a 1″ flap with a square corner like this and stitch.

Repeat this step for the other three sides of the blanket.

Now we are going to snip 1/2″ tubes on the edges of your blanket right up to the stitch making little 1/2″ tubes.

Now we are going to pull the first tube into the second tube with our crochet hook. Then pull the secod into the third and so on an so fourth. You’ll start to notice the awesome braided edge that this technique makes. 20131104_133451

This is a much more grown up version of the standard tie blanket. You can even sew two piece of different colored fleece together to get a two toned look or use a printed fleece on one side and a solid on the other to make a solid border. Get creative. This is a project that makes a great simple gift. You can also use this technique to make a scarf, small baby blankets and so much more!! Get creative Folks! I hope you enjoyed this very simple braided blanket tutorial.

Happy Crafting
