I have been a longtime fan of Harts Fabric, so I jumped at the chance to sew a project to share with you! I picked my fabric out in just under 2 seconds. It was an easy choice, since I’ve had my eye on this Art Gallery rayon challis ever since it was released! When it came to picking a pattern to pair it with, well that was a much different story. I spent a good 2 days browsing their extensive pattern section, trying to make a decision. There are just too many patterns to choose from! I finally settled on a pattern that seems to have a bit of a cult following, the Named Patterns Kielo Wrap Dress.
I have been wanting to try this pattern for a while, but was unsure if it was truly my style. After spending some time searching through pictures of completed Kielo’s in google images, I was convinced I needed to sew one for myself!
I am so glad I did, because I absolutely love how it turned out! Despite the fact that this pattern is designed for jersey fabrics, I saw so many versions made out of rayon in my online searches. I didn’t make any changes to the construction of my dress and my rayon challis fabric worked perfectly for it. I love when a pattern works with both woven and knit fabrics!
I did make a change to the wrap portion of the dress. I was afraid the original design would draw attention to my hips and make them look wider. So I modified the pattern piece, so the skirt was basically a rectangle instead of angling in. I’m happy with this modification, but I’m not sure it was really necessary. I think the shape has more to do with the drape of the fabric, so I suggest picking a fabric with really great drape.
This dress came together super quick and was a really easy sew. It’s just 2 pattern pieces and the ties. I finished my neckline and armsyce with self-bias. You can easily adjust the fit at the waist with the wrap/ties, so pick a size based off your bust. I like to wear mine wrapped pretty tight, but there are so many ways to wear this dress.
Now that I’ve made one Kielo, I understand why it has such a cult following! I need more Kielo’s in my life!
I hope you guys enjoy the rest of Sew Your Hart Out September and are full of inspiration for your future sewing projects. I know I’ve added many patterns to my to-sew list and I’m dying to get my hands on some of that Cloud 9 Organic Tinted Denim after seeing all the amazing garments everyone made!
