For the month of February we are focusing on self-care.
Let’s be real. Winter is a challenge. The past few months have been rough and chaotic. And yet, seeing the brilliance of people working together has shed some light, making us realize that we need to nurture, love and care for each other in order to emerge from the funk. Spring is coming, after all, so why not remind ourselves to slow down, love a little more, and bloom.
Sewing by nature is a slow craft. Hand stitching takes time. As sewing machines evolved, the rate of sewing and consumption has evolved too. With machines that nearly sew themselves, it’s easy to let the craft become mindless. Tack on the influence of the internet, and suddenly it feels like we are constantly falling behind. I know, I’ve felt it. The thing is, sewing is not a race. Unless it’s your job, the deadlines are just expectations we have set up for ourselves. So why do we create so much pressure?
Sewing gives us the opportunity to be mindful everyday. By slowing down and enjoying the process, we get to plan projects, choose fabric, cut, trace, press, and seam the way we want. This should feel empowering. So enjoy it! Self-care is not a quick fix. It takes time, repetition and reflection. Sewing is similar in that way. We have to be patient and creative, making things work, while learning new techniques to meet our needs.
So here we go, embarking on this journey together. Each day we will provide a topic on Instagram. In addition to the daily topics, we will be providing self-care tips. No pressure, just think of them as little challenges to show yourself some love. Maybe you’ll find a few that end up sticking around…By the end, we hope to reinvigorate your love of sewing and rejuvenate your mind by taking time to think about yourself, even if it is for a few moments a day.
See you back here tomorrow!
